Binaural Media and Nodar Artist Residency
Binaural Media and Nodar Artist Residency are offering the opportunity for artists to work in residence in close interaction with the Paiva River based in Portugal.
For this residency I would like to invite participants to listen to a soundscape that will re-trace the footsteps of a journey taken by a performer. Photographs will accompany the walk to reflect the participant’s immediate surroundings and show how the performer has transformed the environment.
It is my intention to compare and contrast the surrounding areas of both rivers (River Trent and Paiva River). Using performance, photography and sound recording, captured with in- ear microphones I plan to produce two binaural audio walks. To intensify the listener experience, recordings using hydrophones and contact microphones will be used, to capture under water soundscapes and minute vibrations.
Listeners will be given a set of photographs, stereo headphones and an mp3 player (or they can download the soundscape), whilst the voice of a narrator guides them along the river. One walk will be aimed at residents and visitors to the River Paiva and the other to residents at the River Trent in Nottingham.
The time spent during the residency would be invaluable to the development of my practice, allowing me to build a relationship with both rivers and the surrounding environment and its inhabitants, including the fishing community, local businesses, residents and people that live on narrow boats. I will share my own personal memoirs (accompanied by photographs), with the inhabitants of the River Trent and the Paiva River, with the intention to capture their viewpoint of the river and its surroundings.
Visitors to Portugal will be able to follow the journey along the Paiva River whilst reflecting on the recordings taken from the River Trent and vice versa. The voice of a narrator will direct the listener during the walk, adding in observations directly related to the surrounding environment.
The listener will reach a point in the walk where they will be asked to stop and reflect on their position during the walk in comparison to the performer’s location shown in the photographs.
The in-ear microphones mimic the way in which we hear with our ears. Therefore when the recordings are listened to through stereo headphones, an intense and startling 360- degree experience is presented to the listener, as if they had been transported to the location where it was originally recorded.

Observations from the River Trent
My practice is site specific and based on my daily interaction with my surroundings, the routes I take and the buildings that I come into contact with. The binaural audio recordings that I gather from my surroundings are used to produce walks and installations.
I am interested in the way in which individuals interact with an area and the memories they associate with a familiar environment. Psychogeography is Guy Debord's theory based on the study of the specific effects of the geographical environment, on the emotions and behaviour of individuals.

For 1 hour each day of the week, I travel between Leicester and Nottingham. The scenery outside my window takes me past the River Soar and when I arrive into Nottingham, the River Trent.
During my journey to work I walk over the Trent bridge and without fail always spot the same man (sometimes sat fishing with a friend) on a bench wearing the same worn out pale blue coat.
I have spotted other 'regulars', in particular those that have just came off the same train and are taking a different route to work via the river. I would like to spend some time observing the relationship that people have with the river and record my discussions with residents and visitors.

The River Trent past and present
The River Trent has been an historic highway as far back as the Bronze Age when it formed part of the trade route between the Continent and the metal-working industry in Ireland. The Romans recognised the value of the river as a route from the sea to the centre of England, and later it acted as an easy route for Viking invaders to attack Nottingham.
The River Trent is one of the major rivers of England. It starts in Staffordshire. It flows through the centre of England until it joins the River Ouse to form the Humber which empties into the North Sea.
The river is surrounded by an industrial estate and is used as a venue for extreme sporting activities and as a method of transport by narrow boat. Princess River cruises regularly offer tours along the river (see map below)

Leicester to Nottingham
I live in Leicester and work in Nottingham and have recently moved house.
I walk along the canal in Leicester on my way to the train station. On the train I pass the River Soar, and when I arrive in Nottingham I walk over a bridge where I can see the River Trent.
My job will come to an end in March 2010 and I will no longer need to travel to Nottingham on a daily basis. I feel Ive built up a relationship with Nottingham City and have a history with the city as a graduate of Nottingham Trent University.
The River Trent in Nottingham has been a point of interest for many creative initiatives, used by professional artists, writers and performers.
I plan to capture binaural audio recordings from the river and the surrounding environment in order to produce a series of binaural audio walks.
